Dzogchen Overview

Dzogs Chen: the importance of Sem-dé...These teachings were therefore given in secret, as they were seen to be too dangerous for the general population. Ngak’chang Rinpoche says of this issue that … "it would seem to be a perennial policy amongst all socially repressive cultures to keep people ignorant and bound in materialistic superstitions of punishment and retribution."….

Döné Sangwa: Basic Goodness: The Natural State...According to Tibetan Buddhism and Bön, Dzogchen (Rdzogs chen or Atiyoga) is the natural, primordial state or natural condition .....Literally translated "Great Perfection," Dzogchen is the gestalt and grounding perspective that informs and resolves all the elements of the Bon tradition.…In Bon Dzogchen it is stated that all of reality is pervaded by a transcendent principle called "All Good". It has a male aspect called Kuntu Sangpo and a female aspect, Kungtu Sangmo.

The View and Practice of Dzogchen...When it comes to the Dzogchen teachings, it's even more serious. They consider them as not Buddhist at all but as some disguised way of bringing back into play some concept of a self, however subtle, with the notion of Rigpa. Therefore, in their view, Dzogchen is almost a theistic teaching, borrowed from the Bon.….

The Twenty One Nails

Twenty-One Nails: Oral Transmission of Zhang Zhung...The Oral Transmission of Zhang Zhung is one of the three principal systems in the Bon tradition for the transmission of dzogchen or "great perfection" teachings....... The Transmission of Precepts consists of precepts, principally the Twenty-one Nails and the Six Lamps, that form the canonical teachings of the Zhang Zhung Oral tradition. The Experiential Transmission consists of detailed instructions on how to actually practice the tradition….

The Practice of the Six Lamps

The Six Lamps: Lhündrub Tögal & the Vima Nyingtik... One of the principal dzogchen (Great Perfection) lineages of the Bön tradition — our suffering in samsara can be traced to a single cause: our failure to comprehend that external appearances are only a manifestation of our own innate awareness. The text of "The Six Lamps" carefully investigates the precise manner by which innate awareness is situated in our body, travels through the channels of the energy body, arrives at our eyes, and emerges as external appearances….

Five Pure Lights ('od lnga) & The Six Lamps...The Five Pure Lights (Tibetan: 'od lnga) is an essential teaching in the Dzogchen tradition of Bön and Tibetan Buddhism. For the deluded, matter seems to appear. This is due to non-recognition of the five lights. Matter includes the mahābhūta or classical elements, namely: space, air, water, fire, earth. Knowledge (rigpa) is the absence of delusion regarding the display of the five lights….

The Practice of the Six Realms

The Seven Mirrors of Dzogchen

The Seven Mirrors of Dzogchen....Dranpa Namkha (8th C.AD)...The Seven Mirrors .....In this brief work are taught seven mirrors that give quintessential instruction on the topics of: preliminaries, view, meditation, result, conduct, the teaching regarding the pure realms and the six migrations, and the ultimate summary of the teaching. As the Seven Mirrors states about its own teaching: 'This is the essence of the teachings: Like seeing your own face in a mirror, you will see the principle of the clear, innate self-awareness.'….

The Chod Practice

Dream Yoga

Dream & Reality: Sufism,Taoism, Dzogchen ... In our waking, intellectual mind, differences dominate and determine how we experience ourselves. Whereas while asleep, the waking, active and conscious mind dissolves into the basic consciousness, kun-gzhi-rnam-par-shes-pa in Tibetan (alaya-vijnana in Sanskrit). The basic, all-ground consciousness stores one’s deeper karmic traces, too, which are a part of oneself. When stirred and awakened, the karmic traces tell stories and convey messages….

Windhorse Practices

Ki So Cha'o: Phywa & the Sang Sol Ceremony...Ki ki so so” is an ancient Tibetan prayer shouted as one crosses a mountain pass....the Ki is a very high pitched sound similar to the cry of an Eagle, equivalent to a seed syllable for the sky.......the So is a very deep earthy sound, equivalent to a seed syllable for the earth.….

Sound, Light & Rays

'Od zer ...Light Rays, Luminosity…Heart, Eyes, and Space...This state of Primeval Purity manifests in the milieu of three elements: sound (sgra), light ('od), and ray (zer). This luminosity resides in the heart of the body like a lighted lamp in a vase....This energy, in the form of light, originates in the physical heart (tsit ta)of the individual. From the interior space within the heart this inner light (nang 'od, Sanskrit: antarayotih) proceeds upward through a translucent channel called the Kati, or smooth white nerve (dkar 'jam stsa) and then exits the body by way of the gateway of the physical eyes." ….

BodhiCitta...Heart Mind...Crystal Kati....Eye Heart... Luminous mind (also, "brightly shining mind," "brightly shining citta") (Sanskrit prakṛti-prabhāsvara-citta, Pali pabhassara citta)….The channel that goes from the heart to the eyes is called the "crystal kati channel"...this seems to be the key to the whole thing.

Lhak-thong: Fourth Moment

Lhak-thong: Fourth Moment Total Presence..".The fourth moment is not a far-out or extraordinary experience as such. It is a state of experience that doesn’t even belong to now. It doesn’t belong to what might be, either. It belongs to a non-category—which provides another sense of category. Thus it is called the fourth moment. " ….

Luminosity

Mother and Child Luminosities: Inner Radiance of the Ground & Path...A fundamental distinction in the Dzogchen literature of 'od gsal is that of 'inner radiance of the ground' ... and the 'inner radiance of the path' ... otherwise known as the mother and child luminosity respectively. "The luminosity experienced in meditation is called the path luminosity, simile luminosity, or child luminosity. The true luminosity of our awakened nature is called the basic luminosity or mother luminosity; it dawns at the moment of death, and if it is recognized, the mother and the child meet and become one in liberation.….

Ösel: Radiant Matter & Radiant Light...Luminosity is often translated as "clear light," which is a literal rendering of the Tibetan rather than the Sanskrit. Trungpa Rinpoche did not like that term, although he did sometimes use it in his talks, which form the basis of his books, because it is so well known. He felt it had become inextricably associated with such notions as the light at the end of the tunnel in near-death experiences, and that it gave too much of an impression of ordinary, visual light, whereas what is meant is an extremely subtle concept that he thought would be conveyed better by "luminosity."….

Nine Breathings of Purification

Nine Breathings of Purification... A simple breathing practice by Tenzin Wangyal Rinpoche….

White A Practice

Garab Dorje: White A Practice...At that moment we do a visualization of the white A in a circle of five colors called a thigle. It represents our primordial potentiality….

Lamed Thegpa, bLa-med theg-pa ...The Ninth Stage of Dzogchen...Bon has three principal streams of transmission of Dzogchen, and of these three the Aural Transmission of Zhang Zhung is considered to be the most profound. ..Drugyalwa Yungdrung's practice manual is quite extensive and contains instruction on preliminaries, actual practices of sky-gazing, sun-gazing and dark retreat, as well as four auxiliary sections which provide deeper instruction on view, meditation, action, and the result. This system culminates in the practice of the 49 day dark retreat, and a detailed instruction manual exists for those practices as well….

The Deities of Dzogchen

Shenlha Odkar, Shiwa Okar & Crystal Iconography...Shenlha Okar is depicted with a white body "like the essence of crystal"…. The analogy given by Dzogchen masters is that one's nature is like a mirror which reflects with complete openness but is not affected by the reflections, or like a crystal ball that takes on the colour of the material on which it is placed without itself being changed. ...In Bon tradition, King Gesar of Ling is sent to Tibet by Shenlha Okar, and Trungpa Rinpoche's blending of native traditions and Indian Buddhism appears to echo Mipham's.

Drala...dgra-bla...dgra-lha...sgra-bla...dralha...drabla..."On the relative level of appearances we do seem to exist.....On that same relative level the Dralas can also be felt and communicated with….There are many gods....They are always present everywhere...."

Natural Perfection ... Pristine Rigpa….Shenlha Okar...Purity of karma, putative rebirth, degree of meditation-concentration, facility in visualization, levels of attainment, and so on, are all issues pertinent to acceptance and success within a hierarchical cult....but to the formless experience of Dzogchen, such considerations have no relevance...any kind of preparation or fore-practice muddies the waters….

Kunzang Akor: Shenlha Okar... Kunzang Akor: the All-good 'A' Circle is a meditational form of Shenlha Okar. He is generally recognized by the Tibetan letter 'A' placed on the chest at the level of the heart. The two hands generally rest in the lap and hold the stems of two flower blossoms supporting a yungdrung (svastika) on the right and a vase on the left. There are numerous traditions of ritual cycles and meditation practices for Kunzang Akor.….

Veneration & Making Offerings..."Venerate The Deity and Make Offerings"….

Dzogchen Teachers

Natural Perfection: Longchenpa's Radical Dzogchen (1350 AD)..."Ordinary people, non-Buddhists and Buddhist followers of the eight lower approaches (monastic, solitary ascetic, altruistic householders, tantric practitioners, atheists, hedonists and monotheistic eternalists....)....are identical in that they do not realize natural perfection.....In this important sense, every path is a dead end.…."

Patrul Rinpoche: Advice from Me to Myself (1808-1887)... Listen up, old bad-karma Patrul, You dweller-in-distraction.....For ages now you've been Beguiled, entranced, and fooled by appearances. Garab Dorje ....dGa'-rab, Persian: گراب‎, Romanized as Garāb (1st c. AD)In the lineage of masters preceding Gyerpungpa, there is found a master named Zhang-zhung dGa'-rab, who may be Garab Dorje... Dzogchen or "Mahâsandhi" in Sanskrit, considers itself the "highest truth", a view superior to Mâdhyamaka. For many Mâdhyamikas, Dzogchen is not even part of the Buddhadharma, but a sort of Chinese Dharma like Ch'an or coming from Advaita Vedânta, Kaśmiri Śaivism, or even Persian religion,

Tapihritsa: Zhang Zhung Dzogchen Master (7th Century AD)...Tapihritsa (c 7th ~ 8th C.) is a Bönpo who achieved the Dzogchen mastery of the rainbow body and consequently, as a fully realised Trikaya Buddha, is invoked as a yidam…. The historical Tapihritsa was born in Zhang Zhung of a family of nomads. Tapihritsa's principal teacher was Dawa Gyaltsen. Tapihritsa was contemporaneous with Ligmincha, King of Zhang Zhung and Trisong Detsen, Emperor of Tibet.….

Shardza Tashi Gyaltsen (1859-1933): Rimé (ris med) Movement...The 'non-partisan,' 'non-sectarian', 'universalist' or rimé (ris med) movement represents no less than the most far-reaching and broadly influential phenomenon to mold the Tibetan religious terrain of Shardza's lifetime.....Jamgon Kongtrul Lodrö Thayé ('jam mgon kong sprul blo gros mtha' yas, 1813-1899) rejected the 'intellectual petrification' associated with Geluk scholasticism, instead advocating fresh interpretations of original Indic texts across sectarian lines....This movement provided a promising avenue for Bönpos to contribute....Bönpos shared with the Nyingmas the position that the Dzokchen view represented the apex of all doxographical systems, and they maintained vigorous traditions of practice associated with it. Shardza's own keen interest in practicing and writing about Dzokchen undoubtedly left him well-positioned to participate in this type of dialogue.….

Shardza Tashi Gyaltsen: Dzogchen Bon-Buddhist (1859-1934)...Shardza Tashi Gyaltsen, who stands as not only the most prominent and influential figure in the Tibetan Bön religion in the twentieth century, but also at the center of a controversy within his own lineage. Dzogchen: Druchen Gyalwa Yungdrung (1242-1290)...Drugyalwa’s practice manual is quite extensive and contains instruction on preliminaries, actual practices of sky-gazing, sun-gazing and dark retreat, as well as four auxiliary sections which provide deeper instruction on view, meditation, action, and the result. This system culminates in the practice of the 49 day dark retreat….the text is filled with beautiful and expansive quotes from the Twenty-one Nails and Six Lamps.

Dilgo Khyentse Rinpoche: The Path of Dzogchen...At the present moment our awareness is entangled within our mind, completely enveloped and obscured by mental activity. Through the practice of Trekchö, or ‘cutting through all attachment’, and the ‘direct realization’ of Tögal, one can unmask this awareness and let its radiance arise.….

Dzogchen Historical Origins

Podrang Zhiwa Ö & the Non-Indic Origins of Dzogchen (1090 AD)...The early history of Dzogchen (rdzogs chen: “the great perfection”) remains unclear and the subject of controversy.......The Indic origin of the early Dzogchen texts was disputed by Podrang Zhiwa Ö, a Western Tibetan monk and ruler of the 11th century, and a proponent of the “new transmissions”. Shambhala Dzogchen

Blue Pancake, Blue Sky Mind & Dzogchen Realization...Buddhism has a number of schools, primarily divided into the hinayana, mahayana and vajrayana traditions, and squabbling goes on among all of them. They all speak the language of totality, and every one of them claims to have the answer. The hinayanists may say that they have the answer because they know reality. The mahayanists may say that the bodhisattva is the best person that we could ever find in the world. Tantric practitioners may say that the most fantastic person is the powerful and crazy yogi who is unconquerable and who has achieved siddhis and magical powers of all kinds. Let them believe what they want......" ....Chögyam Trungpa ….

Shambhala Vision: Secular, Sectarian & Rime...The Shambhala teachings, originally conceived by Chögyam Trungpa as Secular practices for achieving enlightened society.....Shambhala, as originally proclaimed by Chögyam Trungpa, which state that "there is a natural source of radiance and brilliance in the world, which is the innate wakefulness of human beings. This is the basis, in myth and inspiration, of the Kingdom of Shambhala, an enlightened society of fearlessness, dignity and compassion." Furthermore, Shambhala vision applies to people of any faith, not just people who believe in Buddhism... the Shambhala vision does not distinguish a Buddhist from a Catholic, a Protestant, a Jew, a Moslem, a Hindu. That's why we call it the Shambhala kingdom. A kingdom should have lots of spiritual disciplines in it.".....Trungpa, Chogyam ….

Maha Ati & Atiyoga Dzogchen...According to Tibetan Buddhism and Bön, Dzogchen (Rdzogs chen or Atiyoga) is the natural, primordial state or natural condition, and a body of teachings and meditation practices aimed at realizing that condition. Dzogchen, or "Great Perfection", is a central teaching of the Nyingma school also practiced by adherents of other Tibetan Buddhist sects. According to Dzogchen literature, Dzogchen is the highest and most definitive path to enlightenment.….

The Conflation of Mahāmudrā & Dzogchen...Conflation occurs when the identities of two concepts, sharing some characteristics of one another, seem to be a single identity — the differences appear to become lost....

Thodgal...The method Proper to Dzogchen is not the path of transformation as is the case with the Tantras but the path of self liberation. So the procedure in Tantra and in Thodgal is quite different.….
